The Day the Voices Stopped
by Ken Steele and Clarie Berman

The Day
the Voices Stopped is a personal account of Ken Steele's journey
from madness to recovery and how finding treatment inspired him to
become an advocate for people with mental illnesses-which ultimately
helped him regain his sanity and his life. For thirty-two years, Ken
lived with the devastating symptoms of schizophrenia.
Taunted by inner voices, devastated by delusions of paranoia, Ken
fought to free himself from the torment that lived inside his own
mind. These voices them took him on a life-long journey across the
country to find the solace that only could be found in silence.
Ken Steele's recovery
began with a small but intensely dramatic moment. One evening in the
spring of 1995, shortly after starting Risperdal, a new antipsychotic
medicine, he realized that the voices that had tormented him for three
decades had suddenly stopped.
Terrified but also
empowered by this new freedom, Steele rose to the challenge of creating
a new life. He went on to become one of the most vocal advocates of
the mentally ill, earning the respect not only of patients and families,
but also of professionals and policymakers all over America.
